Westwood National Honor Society Holds Initiation

The Westwood National Honor society held its initiation of new members on January 31, 2012. Students are invited to apply who have an 85 overall average or higher and are then selected by the Faculty Council to ensure they exhibit Leadership, Scholarship, Character, and Service. Current members participate in the initiation and adopt a little sister or little brother in the class of initiates to serve as mentor.

The NHS blood drive will be on Friday, May 11 from 7:30 am until 3 pm in the auditorium. Remind those who are giving for you starting in March so they won't give in another drive (they have to wait 6 weeks before giving again.) We will have T-shirts again and are looking for sponsors. Please contact vdavis@westwoodschools.org if you'd like to have your company name on these shirts.

Community service is what we do at Westwood and there are many projects going on right now that need your support. Please join in.

Every year the school has several families in need that we work to help fill their pantry. This is a service project of our high school student government led by Jennifer Good. Please be generous and help these families. For those who wish to help who are grandparents and others, talk to Jennifer Good at 229-336-7992.

One Act Play

All costumes are due by Friday. Make sure all wigs are in gallon zip lock bags.

Elementary students who ordred grey westwood hoodies should pick up from the high school office as soon as possible.

The Westwood Y-Club collected 56 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child and collected $350 to send boxes. These were delivered to Union Grove Church (the pick up center) on November 17th. Lower middle and high school participated. Mrs. Carla's class submitted the largest number of boxes per homeroom so her 8th grade homeroom is the recipient of a pizza party. Thank you for supporting this worthy cause!

It is basketball season. Remember to come. Wear your orange and white and support our cats. Fans in the stands always make a difference. When our cheerleaders cheer, we need to hear your voices. Let's continue to show that Wildcat spirit at everything we do. It is part of who we are.

Mrs. Vicki's computer fundamentals class is designing Christmas cards in photoshop this year. Look for a selection to be mailed out from our board.

Dear Wildcat Fans,

As you know, our football team will be competing in the State Championship game this Friday night at Centennial Stadium at 7:30 p.m. We are very lucky to have the home field advantage and want to take full advantage of that! We need all of our fans to show up decked out in their orange ready to cheer the Cats to victory! We need your help with the following things:

· Please make and/or bring a noisemaker of some kind with you Friday night. A milk jug filled with dried peas or a cowbell will be perfect! Let’s make some noise up in the stands so our boys know we are pulling for them!

· The cheerleaders gave out pom poms at last weeks’ game. They looked great in the stands! If you got one of those, please bring it back with you. If you did not get one last week, they will be giving out some more this week. We want to see them waving all night!

· The cheerleaders are going to lead all the fans in a pre-game pep rally to get the fans fired up and ready to go! Please be at the stadium at 6:30 p.m. for the pep rally. After the pep rally we will all take the field for the Spirit Line. Let’s stretch it across the field this week!

We are so very proud of our team and we want to let them know it! Come out Friday night to support the Cats! BE LOUD AND PROUD! See you there!

This week at Westwood: We're going to State

Wildcat fans across the county are hoarse and certainly our football team is exhausted from one of the most nailbiting, thrilling games we've seen since last year's state playoff against Memorial Day in Savannah. Speaking of Memorial Day, we'll be playing them again in the state championship game next Friday night here at Centennial Stadium. We won against Thomas Jefferson this past Friday night 35-28 in overtime. With cats trailing with less than 1 minute left, the team came through with a touchdown and an unbelievable gymnastic contortion worthy of Olympic competition from a flying Cat. It took a whole team and they pulled through. On Saturday morning many parents (like the one writing this article) are still pinching themselves to remember if last night really happened. (Read the Albany Herald article on the game.) Join us Friday night at 7:30 pm.

Lots more happening at Westwood besides football. Our pageants are this Sunday with the Little Miss and Tiny Miss at 3pm on Sunday and the Junior and Big Miss at 6pm. Each pageant has an entry fee of $10 so come out and support our ladies and help raise money for our annual.

The Juniors ordered rings this past week and seniors ordered graduation supplies.

Cookie Dough orders are due Tuesday, November 22. Please support our curriculum fund with your order.

Monday our lady cats basketball team kicks off at the Terrell Academy tip off tournament. The JV basketball teams started off this past week. Basketball has begun. Another sport that many Cat fans love!

Remember that students get out of school on Tuesday at noon and there will be no daycare. Please be here on time to pick up your students.

This past Friday, Westwood ninth graders presented at the Global Education Conference 2011, an online conference, if you wish to hear their recording, you can view the online classroom to view and listen to their work. [Global Education Recording Link] Online presentation skills are just one of the many things taught to our students here at Westwood as they prepare for world that is increasingly online.

Remember, that we update things live on our Facebook page, so whether you are on Facebook or not, you may want to bookmark or "like" the Wildcat page. (We can access Facebook from our mobile phones which makes it easy to do live updates.) We're proud of all of our Cats in all of our activities and in the classroom. We are very proud to be Wildcats because Wildcats work hard, strive to be the best, and know that life is not something that happens to you but something that you have to live with purpose and a plan. We also know that God is the one with the purpose and plan and that to seek Him is the key to greatness no matter where our paths take us.

Little Mermaid Community Performance

The community performance of The Little Mermaid will be Sunday, November 6 at 3:00pm. There is not charge for admission but donations are being accepted. You do not want to miss this enchanting performance. As the show unfolds, Anemone, an adventurous little mermaid leaves her undersea realm for a birthday excursion to the surface. She hopes to find Prince Theodore, whose statue she has found. Accompanied by her friend, Clem Crab, they begin their quest. The jealous Sea-Witch threatens Anemone. Her nasty shark co-horts terrorize all. The Sea-Witch magically conjures up a storm which sinks a ship carrying the prince. Anemone dives into the waves to save him, and later is tricked into trading her voice to the Sea-Witch. The performance features Miller Singleton as Anemone and Virginia Vereen as the Sea Witch. Trent Hester is Prince Theodore and Daniel Hays plays the role of Clem Crab. Supporting cast members include Pate Council and Hays Grogan as the evil sharks and Riley Ford and Erin Burnett as Georgina and Clara. The undersea world is ruled by Ralph Collins as King Neptune and Claire Collins as Lady Marianna. James Davis is the first mate and Tristan Swan is the Cook.Mermaids are played by Becca Bostick, Laken Lewis, Susan Davis, Ivey Carden, Hope Bailey, Mary Parker Westbrook Toni Hall, Courtney Cochran, and Kendall Butler. Kunjan Patel is the stingray.Thomas Hudgins, Scott Summerlin, Chase Hancock, and Daniel Gay are sailors aboard the Prince Theodore’s ship.The stage crew consists of Nolan Rigsby, Dylan Larkin, Ryan Coker, Alex Bowden andRiley Anderson. Hannah Hinesley and Zachary Hembree are on lights, while West Rogers is in charge of sound. This Hans Christian Anderson favorite is retold in script by R. Eugene Jackson, with music by Carl Alette.

Westwood Wildcats are region champs in Football! Congratulations Cats! We will play in two weeks, probably on Saturday, November 12 at 7:30 pm, so please mark your calendars for the first round of state AT HOME.

Congratulations to the varsity girls cross country team for placing third in the state! Congratulations to our senior Virginia Vereen for placing 9th in the state meet. All cross country uniforms are due immediately.

2011 One Act Play - The Little Mermaid

The One Act Play will compete at region on Tuesday, November 1st at Darton College in Albany at around 11 am. They performed the Little Mermaid. The community performance is Sunday afternoon at 3pm. Donations taken at the door.

The cheerleaders will sponsor a school-wide dress down day Tuesday, November 1. The cost is $2.00. (Remember no gym shorts.)

A camo jacket was left at the football game Friday night. Please see Mrs. Good if it belongs to you.

4H Fruit orders are due tomorrow, November 1st. Bring them to school or turn them in to the 4-H office by 5 pm.

We have Westwood hoodies for sale for $40. See Mrs. Paige or Mrs. Jennifer.

We now have a drop off table in the commons area of the high school table. When you plan on dropping something off for your child, remind them to check the table for the item. This is also where we are leaving messages.

Westwood's GOAL Scholarship Program

In 2008 the Georgia State Legislature passed a new tax law allowing taxpayers to contribute to private school scholarship funds and get a credit against their Georgia income tax bill. The credit is $1000 for single and $2500 for married taxpayers. For example, a married couple who owe $10,000 in Georgia income tax could contribute $2500 to GOAL for scholarships at Westwood and pay the remaining $7500 to the state treasury, therefore costing nothing to contribute to the program. C Corporations can contribute and receive a tax credit up to 75% of its tax liability. An additional benefit is that the amount contributed to GOAL is a deductible contribution for Federal income tax purposes. The GOAL Scholarship Program uses the contributions to fund K - 12 scholarships for public school children who desire to attend private schools. The scholarships are also available for all students who are eligible to enter K4 or K5 kindergarten. Contributions can be designated to directly support scholarships at Westwood School. All students who qualify for GOAL must pass the same entrance test and maintain the same standard of excellence as all other students.The GOAL Scholarship program has been hugely successful for our families and school. The program has helped 70 Westwood students this year. Obviously, in order for the program to be able to continually benefit us, families and corporations must continue to designate the portion of Georgia state income tax to the Westwood GOAL Scholarship Program. The deadline for making a contribution this year is rapidly approaching. We have received notification from GOAL that they are expecting the donation cap to be met by mid November. Softball All-Region and All-State announced

The Westwood varsity softball team had a very successful season this year that ended in the 2nd round of state playoffs losing to Briarwood. The following were chosen for All-Region Honors - Seniors Hope Bailey, Krysten Johnson, Miller Singleton, Junior Claire Collins and Freshman Sage Sandefur. All Region Honorable Mention Honors went to Senior Tinsley Kennedy, Freshmen Lindsey Bowles, Alex Palmer, 8th graders Tatum Brown and Haley Marshall. We also had 3 players chosen for All-State Honors - Pitcher Claire Collins, Catcher Krysten Johnson, and Shortstop Miller Singleton. Miller Singleton was also chosen as Co-Region Player of the Year and selected to play on the All-Star Team. Congratulations to everyone!!!!

It's Jr. Pro Basketball Time!!

Registration is going on now until Thursday, November 3 for Westwood Jr. Pro Basketball for grades 1st - 5th. The fee is $10 and the game dates will be announced once registration is complete. Mrs. Gail Lee is in charge of the program this year and it will be conducted like it was last year. The first part will be drills and stations and the second part will be scrimmaging. T-shirts will not be ordered this year. Forms are going home with students. Please turn forms in to your child's teacher.

The school performance of The Little Mermaid will be Monday morning, October 31^st. Students will need to bring $1.00 admission to see the performance. Please bring your admission to your homeroom teacher before Monday. The community performance will be held Sunday, November 6^th, at 3:00 pm. You do not want to miss this enchanting performance. As the show unfolds, Anemone, an adventurous little mermaid leaves her undersea realm for a birthday excursion to the surface. She hopes to find Prince Theodore, whose statue she has found. Accompanied by her friend, Clem Crab, they begin their quest. The jealous Sea-Witch threatens Anemone. Her nasty shark co-horts terrorize all. The Sea-Witch magically conjures up a storm which sinks a ship carrying the prince. Anemone dives into the waves to save him, and later is tricked into trading her voice to the Sea-Witch. The performance features Miller Singleton as Anemone and Virginia Vereen as the Sea Witch. Trent Hester is Prince Theodore and Daniel Hays plays the role of Clem Crab. Supporting cast members include Pate Council and Hays Grogan as the evil sharks and Riley Ford and Erin Burnett as Georgina and Clara. The undersea world is ruled by Ralph Collins as King Neptune and Claire Collins as Lady Marianna. James Davis is the first mate and Tristan Swan is the Cook.Mermaids are played by Becca Bostick, Laken Lewis, Susan Davis, Ivey Carden, Hope Bailey, Mary Parker Westbrook Toni Hall, Courtney Cochran, and Kendall Butler. Kunjan Patel is the stingray.Thomas Hudgins, Scott Summerlin, Chase Hancock, and Daniel Gay are sailors aboard the Prince Theodore’s ship.The stage crew consists of Nolan Rigsby, Dylan Larkin, Ryan Coker, Alex Bowden andRiley Anderson. Hannah Hinesley and Zachary Hembree are on lights, while West Rogers is in charge of sound. This Hans Christian Anderson favorite is retold in script by R. Eugene Jackson, with music by Carl Alette.

Homecoming is Friday and we've had a great week. Enjoy the mini-parade and pep rally starting at 1:30 pm, Friday, September 29, at the track. Remember to send money for pie tickets with your kids (they are 25 cents a piece - everyone loves hitting people with pies.)

We need you to collect your boxtops and soup labels and send them in with your favorite elementary student as they compete to win awards at the end of the year. We need them!

The football teams continue to play and practice. The softball team is working hard and so is our cross country team. Please join us any time you can and cheer for all of our cats.

Next Thursday, October 6 at 7:30 am we have a meeting for parents and students that are interested in the students attending the Flat Classroom mini-conference in Mumbai, India in February 2012. Our fifth graders skyped with NEPAL and AUSTRALIA last Friday. All of them came in at 7:30 am and we're proud of them for being interested in getting to know people around the world. Expect this class to continue to travel virtually.

The kindergarten students are enjoying their leapsters and we're working to purchase more of them. We're also purchasing more Kindles and getting ready to start posting to the Kindle Kids corner again.

Because of security enhancements some parents and students may experience errors when trying to log on. To fix this problem, you need to clear your browser's history (also known as cache.)

Next Monday, August 29 is our first PTO Meeting/ OPEN House. Join our PTO and see how you can get involved. Middle and High School parents will stay and rotate through classes to understand about their schedule, ask questions, and hear from teachers. While elementary parents are invited to PTO their open house was held before school started.

Thursday Magazine Turn in Day
This Thursday is the first turn in day for magazines. If you don't want a magazine, ask your child's teacher if they need a magazine donated to their classroom. This is IMPORTANT and REQUIRED for having a day off in the winter months.

Upcoming Assembly with US Dept of Ag Chief of Staff
Friday, September 23, Krysta Harden, Westwood Alumnus and current Chief of Staff of the US Department of Agriculture will be speaking to our students grades 6-12. We are honored and excited to hear her speak.

The "official" prep date for Juniors and Seniors for their SAT is November 5th, however, those applying for early admissions will need to take the SAT on October 15th. Westwood's annual Magazine Sale kicked off today. Each student received a packet with order forms and prize information. Turn in dates are Thursday, August 25, Thursday September 1 and Thursday September 8. To ensure each of your children receive credit for magazines sold, please do not combine orders for your children that are in separate grades, send separate orders and money for each child. This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year so please do your part to help our school.

Westwood will have its annual Kick Off Banquet Monday, August 15 at 7pm in the auditorium. Our fall athletes in JV and varsity cheerleading, football, softball and cross country will be introduced. Tickets are $10 for adults and middle and high school students, $7 for 1st - 5th grade, under 1st grade is free. Fall athletes will also be free. Season passes will also be available. Cost is $70 for an individual pass and $130 for a family pass. We hope to see everyone there, this is a great way to start off a new year with lots of fellowship with our Westwood families. Please bring a dessert to share.

We've received a Champion Club donation in honor of Mrs. Becky Cribb and a story that the donor wanted to share on our 40 day campaign website.

"I was there the first year at Westwood as teacher of high-school English and senior class sponsor. Everything was in the one building: kindergarten through grade 12.

Westwood alumni go on to many colleges around the world. From farther away places such as Princeton and Notre Dame to closer to home at Georgia Tech, Georgia, Auburn, FSU, Florida and more. The first graders researched all of the schools where Westwood alumni have gone and made pennants that they have hung in the hallway of the elementary school. Come by and figure out who went where!

State Playoffs in Baseball this Thursday
We play for the state championship in BASEBALL this Thursday at 2pm at Crisp Academy in a double header. We have beat this team once before (and they have beat us once as well.) Although some consider us the "underdog" we are on a 10 game winning streak and plan to FIGHT with all we have to win another state title for 2010-2011. Come out and support the cats!

End of Year Food Drive
Please bring canned food and non perishable food items for the food drive being led by some of our 9-11 grade students as part of their end of year service project. Bring them to the school by Tuesday morning. Thank you! We need more!

Senior Slide Show Monday
Senior ride around and slide show will be on Monday. (It usually starts around 1:45 pm with the ride around.)

Boys JV and Varsity basketball camp Registration forms are due Monday.

On Wednesday, May 25th, grades 1-11 will adjourn to the auditorium at 11 am for a special end of year assembly. School is dismissed at noon with no daycare.

Westwood National Honor Society Initiate Class of 2011

This past February, a new class of National Honor Society members was initiated. Students in grade 10 and up with over an 85 GPA who exhibit leadership, scholarship, character, and service are invited to apply for membership.

These students serve the community and school while maintaining high standards of excellence. To remain in the club, students must participate in several club service projects including the Special Olympics Bocce Ball Tournament and the spring blood drive. They must earn 2 hours of community service and 1 hour of club service every semester in order to remain active - but most do many more activities.

All students at Westwood are expected to do their best and serve their community. It is part of what we do and expect.

Senior Slide Show. A week from Friday at 1:45 pm in the auditorium.

High School Immersion and Service Learning. The last two full days of school grades 9-11 will be traveling for one day to the Flint River Aquarium to conduct hands on science experiments including water sampling and macro-invertebrate studies. The other day, each group of students will be conducting a service project of their own design. This is an important part of learning at Westwood: hands on projects and community service.

Scholarship Winners!

John Carey Vereen Jr. of Camilla has received a $2,000 scholarship from Southwest Georgia Farm Credit. Vereen is a senior at Westwood School in Camilla and plans to attend the University of Georgia to pursue a degree in environmental economics and management in the College of Agriculture.

Jenna Willingham has been selected to receive the Frances Wood Wilson Foundation Inc. scholarship at Valdosta State University. A 2008 graduate of Westwood Schools - Willingham is pursuing a master of education degree in communication sciences and disorders. Daughter of David and Angie Willingham of Camilla."

Story #23: Two Stories of Community Service

The work of the Westwood National Honor Society with the Special Olympics and the Mitchell Baker Area Retardation Center is one of the important service elements at Westwood. Serving and loving others is an important part of what we teach here at Westwood.

In this post, we'd like to give you a look back through the activities that have happened this year with the Special Olympics and our friends at the ARC.

September 2010 Bocce

Westwood National Honor Society students have served as officials in the Special Olympics Bocce Ball Tournament every Fall. This is an important part of service and almost every student grades 8-12 serves and works at the tournament.

February 2011 Beauty Pageant

Because of their work with the Special Olympics and Bocce Ball, two Miss Westwood winners, Joy and Skylar, heard about how the Mitchell Baker Service Center had conducted a Miss Mitchell Baker Service Center Pageant and how the project needed some more help and sponsorship. The two senior National Honor Society members proposed this project to the club and their fellow National Honor Society Members.

On February 14th, the senior National Honor Society members helped sponsor the Miss Mitchell Baker Service Center pageant. They secured donations of old trophies from Westwood students and NHS members volunteered as judges, photographers, escorts, and encouraging members of the crowd. This project was co-organized with Ginna Waters, director of the center.

The club purchased a reward for each member and a sash and crown for the award winner.

"Community service and leadership are things that are expected of Westwood students, especially National Honor Society members," says Vicki Davis, sponsor. "But when students like Joy and Skylar go out of their way to plan something like this during busy annual staff deadlines, term papers, and the excitement of their senior year, it is touching and encouraging. Their work and the work of all of the senior National Honor Society members is a legacy of excellence that transcends any medal or recognition because it is a work of the heart. We are very proud of them."

Join us at the book fair in the elementary library. It is a great time to pick up books and support the school.

Wednesday, Diagnostic SAT for Grades 9-12
While the test given this week is not counted as an "official" SAT score, Westwood takes their SAT prep work very seriously. All students in grades 9-11 will be taking a full length diagnostic SAT to determine their weaknesses and help teachers prep them for the SAT. This is part of Westwood's SAT prep program.

This Thursday, Board of Directors Assembly
8:15 - 9:00 am, Thursday, May 5. Grades 3-12 will meet in the auditorium for the 40 year assembly led by our current and past Board of Directors. Everyone who has ever been a board of director for Westwood is invited to be there for a time of remembering and a prayer of dedication for the future of Westwood. If you want to attend, please email Mrs. Vicki Davis so we can know how to set up the room.

Last Wednesday girls and boys teams played for state championship team tennis.

"Your 2011 State Champions for this years Class A girls is... Westwood!"

Wow, how much better can it get donating 10 points to your team, and knowing that you helped them win a State title! It feels great!

Finally getting that State ring you have been working hard for all year as an 8th grader, and getting to share it with some of the greatest people you will ever know just makes the experience so much better.

Especially with the great coaches.

The Westwood Wildcats girls track team pulled out a win over Randolph Southern, who had 121 points, with 222 points taking Coach Earl Ford to the most he has ever scored in the history of Westwood girls' track in his 16 years of coaching the sport!

But I am not the only 8th grade girl who contributed points to this success! My friend, Elizabeth, contributed enough points to put her as the 4th highest point scorer out of the whole Class A girls track teams!

Not only did the girls succeed in the beginning of the building of their dynasties, but so did the boys track team! The Seniors of the boys' track team (Jake K and Jake E),and the juniors of the girls' track team (Miller, Virginia, and Hope) conquered their quest for the start of leaving Westwood with the legacy they have in mind.

With my first state championship under my belt, I am excited and ready for another title!

Story #21: Elementary Students Learn About Online Safety

As part of their Digiteen action project (www.digiteen.org) ninth graders are teaching elementary students about digital citizenship and online safety.

To celebrate the 40 years of Westwood, they are making sure they teach more than 40 students about online safety and technology concepts. They are teaching students in K4, second grade, fourth grade and fifth grade.

The elementary outdoor classroom was dedicated today in honor of Mrs. Rhonda Bush! The whole elementary school came out to surprise her! This classroom includes a worm farm, compost area, garden, herb garden, butterfly garden, benches, fish pond, and bird feeders and is the work of many parents, volunteers and donors. (The video will be uploaded to youtube soon.)

To celebrate the 40 year anniversary of Westwood, the K-4 students planted 40 marigolds with the help of some ninth graders. The photo album is above.

Story #15 of Westwood: Painting the gym in 1986

I remember in February 1987 the students decided we didn't like the colors in the gym, so we decided to raise the money and got permission to repaint the gym ourselves. We appreciated our headmaster, Graham Lowe, so much and proposed to the board of directors that we name the gym after him. So, we painted the gym and had a marble plaque made and also raised the money and had a band and semi formal dance. To hide this from Coach Lowe we planned the semiformal for Valentine's weekend and said it was for a Valentine's Dance. He and Mrs. Lowe showed up for the dance and almost everyone in Camilla was in the gym applauding them as we named the gym after them.

This showed me that students have a lot more power than they think they do. If you see something you want to improve, do what it takes to make it happen.

That is what inspires me so much about this marketing class I have right now. These students aren't just looking at what Westwood can give them but at what they can give back to Westwood. They are a whirlwind of amazing activity and have put their heart and soul into this 40 year campaign and celebration.

They have inspired me to do more and be more. I'm completely overwhelmed and ask the entire Westwood community to follow the lead of this incredible class of students to celebrate, give, and improve our school to get it in shape for the next 40 years! Let's be more! Do more! And, as always, student leadership is a powerful motivator for all of us. Let's let these students remember the lesson of what they can do like I remember when the adults in leadership supported, empowered, and contributed to us in 1987! GO CATS!

Story #14: Deana Rogers

One of my favorite memories from Westwood occurred about ten years ago. I was working as a tutor in the learning lab to pass the summer along and to earn a few extra dollars for myself.

I can remember it like it was yesterday... an adorable little boy with blonde hair and the bluest of eyes bounced in the lab with homemade bookmarks to sell. As he told me his plans for his earnings and described to me the way in which he personally made each bookmark, I was won over not so much by his sales technique but by his sweet, innocent nature and the youthful excitement I recognized in his eyes. He urged me to purchase one of his bookmarks - telling me not only had he made them himself but also they were selling for a special sale price today. They were on sale for five dollars.

I grinned suspecting he had something up his sleeve and asked him the original price of the bookmark. He replied with unknowing eyes and the sweetest of voices - five dollars. How could I say no to a little salesman like that? I gladly exchanged my five dollars for one of his bookmarks and watched as he eagerly raced on to another potential sale.

To this day, I still have that homemade bookmark. I use it to hold my place in every book I read. I will always keep it to remind myself of the childlike innocence we all once possessed. That little boy is now close to being a grown man, but I still remember him as the little salesman who made me stop and remember what it was like to be a child.

Story #13: Paige Johnson

School had just started for the year. I was headed out of the high school teacher's lounge door and happened to look down. There was a snake halfway in the door and I was standing right over him!!! I started screaming and running back toward the office...I almost ran Mrs. Jennifer Good down as she was running to see what all of the screaming was about.

Later that day we had varsity softball practice and we were using the pitching machine. I came late to practice and took the cover off of the pitching machine. I noticed that all of the players and Mrs. Azalee kept looking at me.

Finally I figured out why...I put my hand on the pitching machine and touched a dead snake that Chason Worsham had put on the pitching machine for me...once again screaming my head off and giving the JV softball fans something to laugh about!!

Education, that is what Westwood, is all about.

Is that what everybody thinks about when they hear the word, Westwood? Maybe, maybe not, I love to win as much as anyone, but that is not what we should think about. My late mother, Veda D. Rigsby was a public school educator for over 30 years and it was her idea for me to go to Westwood. She knew how important a good education was, and decided to send me to Westwood in the 10^th grade, when my step-father was county school superintendent.

That was a hard thing to do, and I appreciate her putting me first, over what somebody might think. Not long after getting to Westwood, my mother met Mrs. Grace Adkins and she knew she had made the right decision. With a much more strenuous workload and Mrs. Grace’s help I was able to make some incredible advances.

When I was in school, did I like going to the lab when I was in school? No, I can remember complaining with all my friends, but it was where I needed to be and it made a profound change in my life.

Now that I have kids at Westwood, I think of Westwood from a different perspective. Shortly after Merritt was born, jokingly I told Mrs. Grace she could retire when Merritt graduated and she agreed. Four years later, I had that same conversation when John Dean was born and she told me she was not making any promises.

As I look back on my years at Westwood, I will always remember the two state championships in football, a doubles region title in tennis and being named Citizen of the Year my senior year, but what made a difference in my life was my education.

I want to say a big thank you to the Westwood teachers and Coach Lowe for always believing in me, but most of all THANK YOU to Mrs. Grace and my mama.

We've been asked how more people can know about what is happening celebrating the 40 year anniversary of the school. Here are four ways we need you to help!

1) Stories. Sending in your stories and memories of Westwood. marketing@westwoodschools.org

2) Facebook. Like the facebook page and ask your friends and network to also through a message or note on your wall - http://www.facebook.com/westwoodfanpage (even posting on the page is great) Check in, like, and comment and those who follow you will learn about the page. Conversations builds community and will attract attention to what we're doing.

3) Donate. Donate through the widget on www.westwoodschools.org so your names will be shown as supporting this effort (remember those giving $100 or more are going on the 40 year plaques we are ordering to be displayed in the foyer) (Those who give are shown on https://sites.google.com/site/cat40celebration/ ) You can pick grounds, athletics, curriculum, or technology

4) Tell others. Write letters or emails asking those who aren't online to support by giving and doing the things we've asked above. People can also get these stories over email on the homepage of the website

Let's use this as an opportunity to reconnect and reaffirm the mission of our school!

The Kindle Kids Corner is now on Facebook for those who want to follow the book reviews being written by our middle school and elementary school. So far, we have the sixth grade writing reviews for the renowed Stephen Windwalker's Kids Kindle blog. Using inkjet money, Boston Butt money, and donations as well as a donation from Windwalker - we now have five Kindles (3 in service and 2 ordered.)

Story #10: Prom 2011

Prom 2011 was an elegant "Egyptian Oasis" complete with sphinx, desert sand, and our very own Pharoah / Headmaster.

One of the highlights of the evening was when junior, Tyler R (T-Rob), was able to skype in from his hospital room to receive his ring and talk with his friends. A server was designated to carry the computer around so he could chat and 'be there" with his friends.

Story #9 of Westwood: Shealy Dixon

One of my favorite memories is when we were going to state. We decorated the whole town with window paint, did cup art, the whole town and then some showed up for the game. The week before, they loaded up the entire high school (and maybe the Jr. High too) in parents' cars, the bus, etc., and took us to Albany to see Remember the Titans. We had the theatre to ourselves. I've always thought that was really special.

Seven state championships and over 30 years of football since Westwood's founding in 1971. Current Headmaster and Head Coach Ross Worsham leads this heartfelt talk with two other great head football coaches in Westwood's History: Former Headmaster and Head Coach Graham Lowe and Former Head Coach Charlie Greene. More than football, this conversation is about the history and heritage of Westwood as well as the victories and heartbreaks that define the life of a school and the students that walk the halls. Westwood is more than a school but a place where character dwells. This is part of our 40 year history event during the last 40 days of school ending our 40th year!

This DVD will be available for sale with proceeds going towards our current football program needs. We will have the largest football team in recent Westwood history next year and have need to buy more equipment to keep the boys safe. You may also donate to support this program as well.

Story #7 of Westwood: We Are Westwood

We are Westwood
Speech given by Alumnus and Teacher Vicki Davis at the Opening Assembly

This school was started in 1971 with a prayer that reminds me of verse, “I commit to you, Lord, whatever I do and trust you to help my plans succeed.” Proverbs 16:6. He has helped our plans succeed.

I was a baby in diapers running around the dining room when the men who started this school met and got on their knees to dedicate this school to God. The parents build these bricks, painted these walls and put the roof over our heads. For almost forty years students have been walking these halls. The lockers on your walls were put there with money raised by students. the cabinets and electricity in your walls have been pulled by men like Mr. Cameron Head, Mike Warren , Mr. OJ Johnson , and Mr. Nelson Burnette. The annuals on your shelves were put together with hours of time and effort and for over ¾ of the school’s existence by Mrs. Caldwell.

You have a beautiful library because some Westwood supporters rasied money. Every book in this library has been picked out by parents and librarians like Mrs. Hand, Mrs. Hays and Mrs. Nancy.

Mrs. Adkins taught me in third grade- The year before the learning lab began and she was helping kids learn and made our school globally famous before anyone thought of the Internet.

Godly men like Coach Lowe and Coach Ross have prayed for this school and loved us. Many people have worked hard in the front office like Mrs. Becky Cribb, Rose Godwin, Trina Woody and our Mrs. Paige Johnson. We have fifteen teachers who graduated from Westwood and are now teaching (and Coach Martin and Mrs. Caldwelll taught and we’d like to think loved us all.)

It would take thousands of pages to list all the sacrifices given here to make this school be here. Around the early 2000’s some believed our school should close -- but the majority of us fought to keep the dream alive. We sold barbecue plates and did freezer sales and anything we could to keep it going. Alumni formed the future club to help this school be here for our kids.

And we prayed. We all felt like this: “When obstacles and trials seem like prison walls to be, I do the little I can do and leave the rest to Thee.” We cried and on our knees before God Almighty we asked God to give us a place where our children could be safe and loved and taught.

We may struggle to make sure that cell phones are in pockets, cheeks are stubble free and ears and eyebrows aren't covered with unruly hair, but we don't have to worry if our babies will come home safe form school.

We are blessed and we are here. Now, ten years later our school is growing again.Defying the odds. In times of recession and some say depression, we have parents who are giving up vacations, nice cars , and beach houses to enrich the minds of their children. In fact, God has blessed us so much that it is likely that in the Fall we may be back up over four hundred students again and hiring more teachers.

We defy the odds- but we cant say we- we have to say He. This school will continue to exist as long as the God fearing men and women pray for it and are willing to sacrifice for the next generation. We will succeed as long as we have students like you who stand up and do things like sell magazines to grandma, sell (and eat) doughnuts to buy new lockers and sell poinsettias so we can give technology to kindergarteners.

We are Westwood - us in this room- your parents- the alumni before you and and the children you haven’t even dreamt of yet.

We are Westwood.

We’re not perfect. We struggle and sometimes we disagree but we pull together and do things people say aren’t possible from running the best Special Olympics Bocce Ball Tournament in the state to creating the most beautiful proms anyone has ever seen to viewing the games people say can’t- we are Westwood.

Our school may not be perfect but it is our school and this is our time to set the stage for our future. We have been through the fire and we have come out fighting and stronger and determined to make this a letter place.

We are a family looking ahead to the future. It is time to pick up bricks and do some more work to make this place shine.

We are Westwood and we are proud of who we are and what God has done for us. We look forward to another 40 years and make this season of celebration. For 40 days we will remember, celebrate, and more forward and as with all great movements we are led by our students. Would the Marketing Class please stand. (ad lib) Be seated.

Now, Coach Ross, could we start this season with a prayer for from you rededicating this school to the God who put us here in the first place? I love you my friends and my students. you are my heroes. (Over to coach Ross.)

Story #6: 40 Pictures of 2nd Graders at Chehaw

The second graders recently went to Chehaw and are celebrating the tradition of learning at Westwood by sharing forty pictures of their learning experience with you!

Wherever we can, we learn by immersion. Whether it is going to the Flint River, hands on experiments, or spending the night at Chehaw, project based learning characterizes a core curricular practice at Westwood.

Story #5 of Westwood: NHS gives to Kindergarten Leapster Lab

Teacher, Holly Layton, has a vision and along with the other kindergarten and first grade teachers they researched the best handhelds to put in the hands of the students that would give the teachers the ability to know where learning gaps exist. They have proposed that we put in an elementary leapster lab in the 2011-2012 school year.

It will take approximately $2800-3000 for this project and the National Honor Society has contributed $1000 towards this cause. We have raised $140 so far on the online widget below.

The National Honor Society students decided that they believe that:

"Technology is the future for these children and we want to help them."

What an inspiration! Students presented the $1000 check to the K5 teachers, Holly Layton and Gail Moss, on March 29, 2011.

The money raised for technology will be spent in this order, according to the spending plans from Betty Shiver and Mrs. Davis:

Funding Leapster Lab $3000
Funding Elementary Rolling Laptop Lab $18000
Remaining funds will improve infrastructure and help with upgrading the high school computer lab.

My Memories of Westwood by Cassie Rackley Clements

I have soo many wonderful memories from my time spent at Westwood. One, that always stands out was my Freshman year of Softball (1992), we beat Deerfield to win Region 1-AAA championship in a nailbiting game. Azalee was our coach and she was probably 7-8 months pregnant with John. She was so happy and we all were so happy. I have attached a photo. LOL!

One more, moving from the lower grade building to the upper grades was awesome. But getting to yell "Junior High" when cheering to the "Let's have a Party at Westwood High" chant was even more cool. :) I am pretty sure it's not a part of game cheers and pep rallies anymore.

My favorite memory is serving on the Homecoming court my Senior year and being escorted by my father who had just days before gotten out of the hospital, ICU. On the court with me was my sister, Missy Beasley, serving as a Freshman, escorted by our Grandfather. We were thrilled my dad was there to share the moment with us.

Scholarship Winners!

John Carey Vereen Jr. of Camilla has received a $2,000 scholarship from Southwest Georgia Farm Credit. Vereen is a senior at Westwood School in Camilla and plans to attend the University of Georgia to pursue a degree in environmental economics and management in the College of Agriculture.
